N. rubroreticulatus is found around Fort-Lamy in Chad with the primary collecting location in Zakouma Park.

It is interesting to note the original collections brought into the hobby by Marc Bellmans were from bags of soil he had dug at a suspected site.  The fish hatched out when introduced into water.
